The base vehicle
The choice of your base vehicle is critical and has to be carefully considered, but is also an emotional decision. An expedition vehicle that is suitable for worldwide use gets by with simple technology and few electronics. What is needed is robust and reliable technology. Some older series four-wheel trucks as well as a number of newer makes qualify for this purpose. Each make and model shows different strengths, but you also simply have to like it.
You can take these factors into account when choosing your base vehicle:
- What kind of driver's license do you have?
- What is the availability of spare parts in your travel countries?
- How many people do you want to seat in the cab?
- How big do you want your cabin to be?
- Which engine do you want?
- Do you prefer a manual or an automatic transmission?
- ...

Base vehicles under 7.5t
An expedition truck with a gross vehicle weight of no more than 7.5t is a tempting proposition. Depending on the date of the first issuance of your driver's license, a regular driver's license is sufficient [in Germany].
One thing first: although it is possible to complete a 7,5t expedition truck, this comes with limitations, e.g. regarding the fuel and water tank capacities, the interior fittings and rear racks. The payload is also severely limited.
Here are a few examples of base vehicles that can be used for expedition vehicle in this weight class:

- Mercedes Benz 814, 914, 917
- Iveco 75-16, 80-16, 90-16
- Iveco Daily
Base vehicles over 7.5t
For comfortable travel without compromise, we recommend a gross vehicle weight of over 7.5t. In this category, the choice of base vehicles is large and allows for personalized choices.
Examples of suitable base vehicles include:
