The choice of your base vehicle is critical and has to be carefully considered, but is also an emotional decision. An expedition vehicle that is suitable for worldwide use gets by with simple technology and few electronics. What is needed is robust and reliable technology. Some older series four-wheel trucks as well as a number of newer makes qualify for this purpose. Each make and model shows different strengths, but you also simply have to like it.

An expedition truck with a gross vehicle weight of no more than 7.5t is a tempting proposition. Depending on the date of the first issuance of your driver's license, a regular driver's license is sufficient [in Germany].
One thing first: although it is possible to complete a 7,5t expedition truck, this comes with limitations, e.g. regarding the fuel and water tank capacities, the interior fittings and rear racks. The payload is also severely limited.
